When Kusama moved to the United States in 1957, she brought around two thousand paintings with her, to show and to sell as a means of income. She then burned the works she could not bring from her parents’ home in Matsumoto, to start from scratch in New York.

Family conflict and the desire to become an artist drove her to move in 1957 to the United States, where she settled in New York City. Before leaving Japan, she destroyed many of her early paintings. Her early work in New York City included what she called “infinity net” paintings.

When she was in High School she started suffering from visual and hearing hallucinations. She used to hang out in the fields with a drawing kit when suddenly flowers, animal and vegetable began to speak to her. She used to quickly run back home and draw her visions in the most detailed way.
